Any executable program is called process. Everything starts when you turn on your computer, is a process. Each process runs on behalf of any user. Processes that are started at boot are usually run as root user, or on behalf of the user nobody. Processes are running, you are typically performed on your behalf. Processes started by other users under their name.
You can manage the processes that you started. In addition to this, root can control all processes in the system, even those run by other users. Processes to manage and monitor them through special programmes, as well as using some shell commands.
